Course Description

A common complication that can slow down the rehabilitation process is edema. Edema can present in any patient type (young/old, ortho/neuro) and in any patient care setting acute - subacute - outpatient - sports). Although it is a very common occurrence, edema is not always well understood or treated effectively.

This intensive two day course is designed to teach clinicians to differentiate between various edema etiologies and design effective treatment programs based on those findings. Many topics will be covered, including anatomy and physiology of the arterial, venous, and lymphatic systems as well as methods for evaluating each of these systems.

Numerous treatment techniques will be covered, such as compression bandaging as well as a hands-on introduction to manual lymphatic drainage.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Compare and contrast the anatomy and physiology of the arterial, venous and lymphatic systems
  • Identify edema etiology based on characteristics
  • Differentiate between edema management options and choose when they are appropriate
  • List characteristics and functions of bandaging materials and demonstrate proper application of various bandages
  • Perform a thorough assessment and develop a successful treatment plan
  • Express the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach and select effective communication strategies
